On Friday 26th February 2021, the NSW government moved to ban the captive breeding of cetaceans (which includes dolphins, whales, orcas and porpoises). This is great news and means that Queensland is now the only state in Australia with an active captive dolphin breeding facility.
Pressure is building on Sea World on the Gold Coast in Queensland – as the only captive breeding facility left in Australia – to halt breeding dolphins.
The needs of these animals simply cannot be met in captivity, and there is no excuse for purposely breeding more dolphins who may live for up to 50 years.
Sea World has so far demonstrated it is unwilling to do the right thing, so we call on the Queensland government to follow the lead of NSW and ban captive breeding of cetaceans.
