The Queensland Government promised greyhounds a safer future. But just months after the gates opened at The Q — an $86 million racing facility in Purga, near Ipswich, Queensland — at least ten greyhounds are already dead following catastrophic on-track injuries and we are waiting to hear the outcome for several other dogs.
This is the real cost of the racing industry.
The Q was designed to replace the old Ipswich track, which saw 41 greyhound deaths and more than 2,500 injuries (including 453 categorised as “major”) between 2020 and 2025. [1]
Racing Queensland and the state government poured $44 million of taxpayer money into this new “world-class” venue, boasting about its supposed safety improvements. But the reality for greyhounds has remained horrifyingly familiar.
In March 2025, two greyhounds suffered hock fractures over two days of trials. Both were killed. [2] On April 4, during the soft opening, another dog sustained injuries so severe they too were killed. [3]
By May, the death toll had already reached seven. [4]
Since the facility officially launched, three more greyhounds have been killed after racing incidents at The Q. [5]
Racing officials continue to boast that The Q is a game-changer for greyhound safety. But the ten dogs who have been killed following races at this track never got to see that future.
These deaths didn’t happen in an outdated, neglected backwater. They happened at the crown jewel of Queensland’s racing industry. A venue touted as the safest in the country.
No matter how many millions are spent dressing it up, greyhound racing is inherently deadly.
These are not accidents. They are the predictable outcomes of a system that treats dogs as expendable commodities—bred to be raced, injured, and killed for profit.
We are calling on Racing Queensland and the Queensland Government to suspend racing at The Q until an independent safety audit is completed, and to implement a legitimate plan to phase out greyhound racing in Queensland.
Lives ended. Dogs betrayed. They deserved better.
Shut Down The Q
